OBS WebSocket Setup

Step-by-step guidance for enabling OBS WebSocket, securing the connection, and preparing OBS for reliable remote control from a phone or tablet.

Enable the Built-In OBS WebSocket Server

Modern versions of OBS Studio include the WebSocket server by default. That means you usually do not need an extra plugin to enable remote control.

  1. 1Open OBS Studio.
  2. 2Go to Tools and then WebSocket Server Settings.
  3. 3Enable the WebSocket server and confirm the port settings.
  4. 4Set a password if your workflow requires it.

Prepare the Network Connection

Most production teams should keep the controller device and the OBS computer on the same local network. That keeps latency low and makes failures less likely during a livestream.

  • Verify both devices are on the same Wi-Fi or wired network segment.
  • Confirm the OBS machine IP address before pairing.
  • Avoid changing networks right before a live event.

Test the Connection Before Going Live

Remote control is only useful if the workflow is predictable under pressure. Test the actions you care about before every major stream.

  • Switch scenes from the controller device
  • Mute and unmute a microphone
  • Trigger a simple macro
  • Confirm stream or recording controls respond correctly

Next Step After WebSocket Setup

Once WebSocket is enabled, you can connect a mobile controller such as DeckPilot and use it as an OBS controller, OBS phone remote, or OBS tablet controller. The OBS controller page shows how that workflow fits together.

Need a Controller After Setup?

DeckPilot connects to the OBS WebSocket server you configure here and gives you scene control, audio control, and macros on a touchscreen.
